My Personal Experience with Wine

Hello everyone, welcome to my blog!

My name is Caroline and I am a senior at Virginia Tech majoring in Marketing.  I have one more semester left in college and I want to make the most of it. When I was signing up for classes last semester I am across a course called Geography of Wine that studies the production, consumptions and cultural forces of wine.

I have never been a big wine drinker before. I’d tasted it numerous times but it was never my drink of choice. I viewed it to be more for older adults, not poor college students. But my opinion of wine started to change spring semester junior year when I studied abroad in Lugano, Switzerland. Living in Europe of 4 months definitely made me change my attitude about wine because it is such a big part of their culture.  While I was abroad wine was pretty much all I drank. I started to develop a taste for all different types of wines…white, red, rose, sparkling, etc. For the first time in my life I started to have a glass of wine with dinner and order it when I was out with friends.

While I was living in Europe I traveled to Florence for a weekend. While I was there I was able to venture out to the Chianti wine region of Tuscany. I visited a 12th century castle called the Castllo di Poppiano which produces several different wines. I was able to tour the castle and see all the ancient and modern equipment that is used to produce the wine, and had a wine tasting at the end of the tour. It was a really fun and insightful experience. I posted a few pictures below from the tour.

I have definitely become more educated about wine in the past year, but still have a lot to learn. I am looking forward to becoming more knowledgeable about wine from this class.
